Howard Springs Primary School is committed to the health and safety of all our students. We strictly adhere to the Northern Territory Department of Education’s policies and guidelines regarding the management of medical conditions and the administration of medication.
If your child requires medication during school hours, please be aware of the following requirements:
General Guidelines
Prescription Only: The school will only administer prescribed medication.
Safe Transport: Parents and carers are responsible for the safe transportation of medication to the front office. Students must not carry medication to school in their bags.
Packaging: All medication must be provided in its original bottle or container from the pharmacy.
First Doses: A student should never take their first dose of a new medication at school. This must be supervised by a family member or health professional at home in case of an allergic reaction.
Short-Term Illness (e.g., Antibiotics)
All requests to administer prescribed short-term medications must be submitted in writing using our Administering Medications
This form must be supported by specific written instructions from the medical practitioner or pharmacist detailing the dosage and time.
Note on Antibiotics: If antibiotics are prescribed three times a day, they should be managed at home unless the doctor specifies an exact school-hours time. The school will administer them if prescribed four times a day.
Long-Term Medical Conditions
For students with a diagnosed medical condition (such as asthma, severe allergies, etc.) requiring ongoing management:
Parents must notify the school and provide detailed medical documentation.
